About

Hi! My name is Alex and I love houseplants, pots with faces, and the color blue.

My partner and I live in Durham, North Carolina with our two dogs and dozens of plants. When I’m outside, I love gardening and playing with my dogs. Indoors, I’m all about houseplants, crocheting, reading, and TV marathons.

I started outdoor gardening as a child and loved helping my grandma harvest fresh rhubarb for strawberry rhubarb pie.

Inside, I had less of a green thumb.

After several houseplant murders, I finally succeeded in keeping a pothos alive for my entire senior year of college. Yay!

I dabbled in urban gardening on my apartment balcony after graduation. Then, our second apartment had a skinny raised bed where I grew some veggies and herbs.

In the winter of 2019/2020, I purchased a couple houseplants. When COVID hit, I had five houseplants growing on the windowsill in my kitchen.

Now, I have over 20 plants in my office alone. Nevermind how many are in the hallway, kitchen, dining room, bedroom, and my partner’s office… let’s just say it’s a lot more than five.

No one has a 100% success rate with their indoor plants, and I’m no different. But after a lot of mistakes and murders, I’m here to share what I’ve learned over the last 25+ years. Hopefully, these simple tips will help you help your houseplants thrive.

What to expect from YouShouldPlant.com:

I’ll be sharing tips for growing houseplants, round-ups of perfect plants for different situations, and my favorite houseplant products. All of my posts will feature pics of my real-life plants — not just stock images pulled from Google.

All opinions are 100% my own, and I won’t let free products or affiliate commissions come in the way of my recommendations.
